DIGAREC – Digital Games Research Center
Digital games are the new mass medium of present times. Yet, academic research of the medium has just begun – especially in Germany. Hence, the Digital Games Research Center has been founded in 2008 at the University of Potsdam in order to establish a fruitful fundament for further research.
DIGAREC is a pool of scholars from diverse research areas. Since its foundation it combines the disciplines of media studies, psychology, design, media law, computer science, cultural history and allows fruitful synergy effects for all participants.
It is our goal to strengthen the media and research location of Berlin-Brandenburg as well as to bring together national and international game scholars. In this respect DIGAREC regularly hosts and organizes events, publications, conferences and exhibitions regarding computer games.
The first public event took place in May 2008. In cooperation with the Universities of Oslo (N), Copenhagen (DK) and Modena (I) DIGAREC hosted the 3rd international conference “The Philosophy of Computer Games 2008”.
In the last winter semester 2008/09 we have started the DIGAREC Lectures as a new platform for academic discourse on computer games. In this biweekly series of lectures the ongoing projects and research approaches of our members are presented and discussed in public at the University of Potsdam.
In the end of 2008 we published the Conference Proceedings of the Philosophy of Computer Games Conference in Potsdam 2008. The whole book is available via http://opus.kobv.de/ubp/volltexte/2008/2007/.
The Members of the Center come from the University of Potsdam, the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, the Institute of Digital and Interactive Culture, the Hasso Plattner Institute and the Erich Pommer Institute.
